Sterlite Technologies uses green hydrogen to decarbonise fibre manufacturing

Sterlite Technologies Limited (STL) has shifted four manufacturing plants in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar (Aurangabad), Maharashtra, to electricity sourced entirely from wind and solar power through the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL).

The transition is expected to reduce market-based Scope 2 emissions from STL’s optical fibre and optical fibre cable plants by approximately 65%, lowering emissions across the participating manufacturing facilities.

Green hydrogen

STL has also integrated 100% green hydrogen into its glass manufacturing operations. The process is an energy-intensive stage of optical fibre production that has historically used conventionally produced hydrogen and oxygen.

The shift to green hydrogen enables STL to reduce emissions from one of the more difficult-to-abate stages of the optical fibre value chain.

Product footprint

STL has reduced the carbon footprint of its G.657.A2 optical fibre, which is widely used in data centre and telecom networks, from 4.7 kg CO2e per fibre kilometre to 0.9 kg CO2e/fkm. This represents an 80% reduction.

The company also has a range of Eco-labelled Certified Optical Products.

Corporate mobility

STL has revised its corporate mobility policy to encourage the adoption of vehicles with lower carbon emissions. Under its Company Car Policy, the company has introduced dedicated incentives and increased limits for employees choosing electric and hybrid vehicles.

The changes are intended to reduce STL’s Scope 3 operational carbon footprint and support its broader environmental, social and governance (ESG) objectives.

Rahul Puri, CEO of ONB at STL, said decarbonisation at STL involves connected decisions covering the power used by its plants, the materials used in its fibre and its employee policies. He said the company is combining renewable energy, green hydrogen and Eco-labelled product innovation to make measurable progress towards a greener and more environmentally friendly manufacturing ecosystem.
