Tata Motors, Welspun Renewable to develop 86 MW hybrid RE project
Tata Motors Limited has partnered with Welspun Renewable Energy Private Limited (WREPL) to co-develop an 86 MW wind-solar hybrid renewable energy project that will supply clean power to the company’s commercial vehicle manufacturing plants in Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Karnataka.
The project will be developed through a co-investment model and a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). According to Tata Motors, the renewable energy generated from the integrated wind-solar hybrid project will help power its four manufacturing facilities and support its RE100 commitment.
Project details
Under the agreement, Tata Motors and WREPL will jointly develop the 86 MW hybrid renewable energy project to supply electricity to the company’s commercial vehicle manufacturing plants in Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Karnataka.
The company said the project is intended to reduce carbon emissions from its manufacturing operations while ensuring a reliable supply of renewable power to its facilities.
Commercial vehicle business
The announcement comes as Tata Motors continues to report growth in its heavy commercial vehicle (HCV) business, supported by higher freight availability, infrastructure development and mining activity.
According to the company, demand for its Intermediate, Light and Medium Commercial Vehicles (ILMCV) remains strong, driven by the e-commerce, FMCG, courier and parcel segments.
Tata Motors also said its Commercial Vehicles Passenger (CVPU) business is witnessing improving momentum in last-mile mobility, with electric small commercial vehicles (SCVs) and pick-ups recording their highest-ever salience of around 10% during May and June. Demand for commercial passenger vehicles continues to be supported by school transport requirements and government orders.
