ISTS scheme for green hydrogen units in Tuticorin approved

The National Committee on Transmission (NCT) has approved a Rs 26.17 billion interstate transmission system (ISTS) to support upcoming green hydrogen and green ammonia projects in the Tuticorin area of Tamil Nadu. The project, titled “Transmission system for proposed green hydrogen/green ammonia projects in Tuticorin area,” will be implemented under tariff-based competitive bidding (TBCB) with REC Power Development & Consultancy Ltd (RECPDCL) serving as the bid process coordinator.

The project will be completed within 30 months and is now awaiting final approval from the Union Power Ministry. It will accommodate power demands from two bulk consumers: AM Green Ammonia (India) Pvt Ltd, with a 1,660 MW capacity set to begin operations by December 2026, and Green Infra Renewable Energy Farms Pvt Ltd, which will add 800 MW by December 2028.

CTUIL estimates that power requirements for upcoming green hydrogen and ammonia plants in the Tuticorin area will reach around 7,015 MW by 2030. The project involves constructing a new 765/400 kV substation at Tuticorin with a 765kV double-circuit line connecting it to the existing PGCIL Tuticorin Pooling Station, as well as upgrading substations at both Tuticorin and Dharmapur (Salem New) to enhance capacity and reliability.

This transmission scheme is critical in meeting the future energy needs of the green hydrogen and ammonia sector in Tuticorin, supporting India’s push toward renewable energy.
