Navitas Solar to invest Rs 1,500 crore in 3.6 GW solar cell plant

Navitas Solar has announced plans to invest around Rs 1,500 crore to establish a 3.6 GW solar cell manufacturing facility and a pilot wafer-and-ingot production line at its Ankleshwar campus in Gujarat. The project marks the company’s entry into solar cell manufacturing and expands its presence across the solar value chain.

The expansion will be implemented in phases and is aimed at reducing dependence on imported components while strengthening domestic manufacturing capabilities. The first phase is targeted for commissioning in 2027, subject to market conditions and project readiness.

Project details

Of the total planned investment, around Rs 1,400 crore will be allocated to the 3.6 GW solar cell manufacturing facility, while Rs 100 crore will be invested in the pilot wafer-and-ingot production line.

According to the company, civil work covering more than 10 lakh square feet is already underway at the site.

The solar cell facility is being designed as a highly automated manufacturing line with the flexibility to incorporate future technology upgrades, including next-generation solar cell technologies. The pilot wafer-and-ingot line, planned for 2027, forms part of the company’s long-term strategy to build upstream manufacturing capabilities.

Existing operations

Navitas Solar currently operates 3 GW of solar module manufacturing capacity in Gujarat.

This includes a 0.5 GW facility in Surat that has been operational for more than 11 years and a 2.5 GW manufacturing plant in Ankleshwar that was commissioned last year. The Ankleshwar facility is currently operating at an annual utilisation level of 65-70%.

The company manufactures Mono PERC and TOPCon solar modules ranging from 40 W to 720 W. Through its subsidiary, Navitas Alpha Renewables, the company also manufactures solar encapsulants, providing a degree of backward integration within its existing operations.

Management statement

Commenting on the expansion, Vineet Mittal, Director – Finance & Strategy, Navitas Solar, said that the investment is intended to build manufacturing capabilities across modules, cells and upstream segments of the solar value chain.

He added that the company has finalised technology partnerships for the proposed facility and appointed senior leadership to oversee the new manufacturing vertical.

The expansion is expected to generate nearly 1,000 direct jobs across manufacturing, engineering, operations and research functions, while also supporting additional employment in logistics and ancillary industries.
