Adani Power to triple Kawai thermal plant capacity with Rs 180 billion investment
Adani Power plans to triple the capacity of its Kawai thermal power plant in Rajasthan, increasing it from 1,320 MW to 4,520 MW, with an investment of up to Rs 180 billion. The expansion will be carried out in two phases, each adding 1,600 MW over the next few years.
As part of its broader strategy to double its thermal power capacity, Adani Power is also setting up new plants and expanding existing ones across India. The company has already placed a Rs 100 billion order with Bharat Heavy Electricals (BHEL) for the Kawai plant’s expansion.
To support these plans, Adani Power has secured domestic fuel tie-ups through long- and medium-term contracts, ensuring fuel supply and cost control. The company has signed new power purchase agreements for 6,400 MW, linked to pre-assigned mines from state allocations, and is enhancing fuel availability through commercial mining licenses at strategic locations.
Adani Power has identified a development pipeline totalling 11.2 GW. This includes three projects of 1,600 MW each in Raipur, Raigarh, and Mirzapur. The Raipur and Raigarh projects are brownfield expansions in Chhattisgarh, costing nearly Rs 100 billion, while the Mirzapur project in Uttar Pradesh is a greenfield facility being developed by Adani Power’s subsidiary, Mirzapur Thermal Energy (UP).
