Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) has approved procurement of cold spare transformers and reactors at an estimated cost of Rs 705.30 crore, according to a regulatory filing dated March 19, 2026.

The approval was granted at a board meeting held on the same day and follows recommendations of the 77th Northern Regional Power Committee (NRPC) meeting. POWERGRID has set an implementation timeline of 30 months from the date of investment approval.

Cold spare transformers and reactors serve as backup equipment for high-voltage transmission systems. They are deployed to replace failed units, enabling faster restoration and reducing outage durations. Procurement at this scale indicates either network expansion or replacement of ageing spare inventory within the northern regional grid.

POWERGRID operates India’s inter-state transmission system and manages bulk power transfer across regions. The northern region, overseen by NRPC, is one of the largest in terms of transmission infrastructure and electricity demand.
