The Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station (NJHPS), operated by SJVN Limited, has achieved cumulative power generation of 150 billion units (BU). The 1,500 MW underground hydropower station reached the milestone on March 9, 2026.
In a press release, SJVN stated that the project has maintained consistent operational performance since its commissioning in May 2004. Chairman and Managing Director Bhupender Gupta congratulated the NJHPS team and noted that the station has become a key source of green power for the northern grid, contributing to reliable supply and supporting grid stability during peak demand periods.
The project has recorded several operational milestones over the years. NJHPS registered its highest annual generation of 7,610.257 million units in the fiscal year 2011-12. It also achieved a monthly generation peak of 1,222.170 million units in July 2024 and its highest daily generation of 39.572 million units on August 13, 2024.
Ajay Kumar Sharma, Director (Personnel) at SJVN, acknowledged the efforts of current and former employees associated with the project. He also highlighted the project’s role in supporting regional development and economic activity in surrounding areas.
Rajeev Kapoor, Head of Project at NJHPS, thanked the management of SJVN, the Ministry of Power, and the Government of Himachal Pradesh for their support. He also acknowledged the contributions of stakeholders, employees, contractors, and local communities in achieving the generation milestone.
According to SJVN, the cumulative generation of 150 BU has contributed to reducing reliance on fossil-fuel-based electricity generation and lowering greenhouse gas emissions. The station continues to operate with ongoing modernization measures, digital monitoring systems, and regular maintenance practices.
