Report: July 2024 Power sector installed capacity overview

As of July 31, 2024, India’s total installed capacity for power generation reached 448,381.44 MW, covering various energy sources across different sectors and regions. The breakdown includes thermal power, which accounts for 242,996.91 MW, primarily derived from coal, lignite, gas, and diesel sources. Hydropower contributes 8,180 MW, covering major hydroelectric plants across the nation. Renewable energy sources (RES), which include solar, wind, biomass, and small hydro projects, account for 47,928.17 MW. Nuclear power adds another 8,180 MW, distributed among several nuclear plants.

Sector-wise, the state sector contributes a total of 108,242.94 MW. The private sector, being the largest contributor, adds 235,685.58 MW, highlighting the increasing role of private enterprises in the power sector. The central sector accounts for 104,452.93 MW.

Regionally, the Northern Region is dominated by thermal power, with a total installed capacity of 127,353.29 MW. The Western Region makes significant contributions from both thermal and renewable sources, totalling 130,944.28 MW. The Southern Region has a total capacity of 108,878.33 MW, with substantial hydro and renewable installations. The Eastern Region has the smallest capacity among the regions, with 35,570.02 MW, focusing on thermal and renewable energy. The North-Eastern Region has the least installed capacity at 5,496.04 MW, predominantly utilizing gas and hydropower.
