A consortium of NTPC Limited and Maharashtra State Power Generation Company Ltd has secured approval from the National Company Law Tribunal in Delhi to take over Simar Thermal Power Limited, which is undergoing insolvency proceedings. NTPC confirmed the order in a regulatory filing on November 28, 2025.
The acquisition centers on STPL’s 1350 MW coal based plant in Simar, Nashik. The facility consists of five units of 270 MW each. The asset is expected to strengthen the generation portfolios of both NTPC and MAHAGENCO and expand their presence in western India. For MAHAGENCO the project adds valuable capacity to support demand in Maharashtra.
The next steps depend on the conditions set out in the tribunal’s approval order and compliance with applicable laws. The process has moved forward under the Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process of the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code 2016.
The approval highlights the role of major public sector companies in resolving stressed power assets and restoring non operational plants to the national grid.
