US states and companies are continuing renewable energy efforts despite federal policy rollbacks under President Donald Trump, according to a Climate Council report. China, meanwhile, is emerging as a global clean energy leader.
California, powered two-thirds by clean energy, remains a national climate leader, while Texas is the top US wind producer. Across the country, 84% of companies maintain climate commitments, with 37% increasing targets.
China has cut emissions in the first half of 2025 and contributed to a 1% global climate pollution reduction in 2024. Its solar and wind capacities have grown rapidly, reaching 2030 targets six years early.
Australia could gain A$190 billion ($124.1 billion) in exports with a stronger 2035 climate target, while other major economies are adapting to shifts toward renewables.
Global renewable investment is projected at A$3.4 trillion in 2025, double fossil fuel spending. Renewable generation is expected to surpass coal by 2025–26 and nearly double by 2030.
China’s coal generation fell 3.4% year-on-year in the first half of 2025, even as the country continues building coal plants.
