Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, on August 17, 2025, inaugurated the state’s first green hydrogen plant at Khanimpur village in Gorakhpur district. The facility, set up by Torrent Gas and Torrent Power, is the second of its kind in India.
The project has been designed to produce 72,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually. In its pilot phase, the plant will blend 2 per cent green hydrogen with natural gas for distribution through city gas systems, covering both compressed natural gas (CNG) and piped natural gas (PNG).
According to officials, the 2 MW renewable energy-based plant will generate hydrogen through electrolysis and is expected to reduce carbon emissions by about 500 tonnes. The state government had introduced a Green Hydrogen Policy last year, offering up to 30 per cent capital subsidy, with the first four projects eligible for a 40 per cent subsidy.
Speaking at the launch, the Chief Minister said that green hydrogen represents a future energy option that can ensure a continuous electricity supply and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. He noted that Uttar Pradesh has potential for such projects because of its water resources. The Chief Minister also linked the initiative to wider climate challenges, pointing to shifting rainfall patterns and the importance of renewable energy and organic farming.
