The West Bengal cabinet has approved the construction of two 800 MW supercritical power units in Salboni, Jhargram. The projects are expected to draw investments exceeding Rs 10,000 crore and will operate under a public-private partnership model.
State power minister Aroop Biswas noted that JSW Group is already setting up two 800 MW supercritical units at the same location.
The Salboni site has a long history of proposed power developments linked to JSW Group. Earlier plans dating back to 2007 involved an integrated steel plant and captive coal-fired power plant, which faced delays and cancellations due to land, coal allocation, and environmental clearance issues. The project was put on hold in 2014 but revived in 2025, when JSW Energy signed a power purchase agreement with the West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company for a greenfield 1,600 MW thermal power station.
In April 2025, JSW Energy broke ground on a 2 x 800 MW ultra-supercritical expansion at Salboni. The company has since sought fresh terms of reference from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change for the project, which will use domestically sourced coal.
