Solar energy transforms brick kilns in Uttar Pradesh
In western Uttar Pradesh, brick kilns in villages like Kodiaganj, Pilakhana, and Akrabad are increasingly adopting solar energy, marking a shift from coal to cleaner power sources. Eight brick kilns in Aligarh district have already installed solar panels to meet their electricity needs, a small but significant step in the district’s 555 kilns.
Brick kiln owner Om Prakash Sharma, who invested Rs 0.7 million in 16 solar panels, reports monthly savings of Rs 50,000. The solar power not only runs kiln operations but also provides electricity to workers’ huts, improving their living conditions.
Workers, who previously relied on oil lamps and pilfered electricity, now benefit from lighting, fans, and phone charging, enhancing safety and comfort. However, the extreme heat remains a challenge, with fans sometimes circulating hot air, worsening conditions during the day.
The adoption of solar energy extends beyond the kilns, with workers purchasing smaller panels for personal use. Despite seasonal fluctuations, demand for solar panels is on the rise, reflecting growing awareness of renewable energy benefits.
Social entrepreneurs see potential in scaling up solar energy in rural areas but note the high initial costs and need for powerful batteries as significant challenges. The shift to solar power in these brick kilns represents a mixed but promising step toward cleaner energy and improved livelihoods.
