Centre cancels 11.4 GW renewable tenders

Central agencies have cancelled 11,400 MW of renewable energy tenders since April 2023 due to low participation, high tariffs, and withdrawal by end-procurers.
Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy Shripad Yesso Naik said SECI, NTPC, NHPC, and SJVN issued the tenders. As of June 2025, these agencies have issued Letters of Award for 43,922 MW, but Power Sale Agreements (PSAs) remain unsigned for much of this capacity. Only 22,683 MW has secured PSAs.
To address delays, the government amended bidding guidelines in February 2025. LoAs can now be cancelled if PSAs are not signed within 12 months. Naik added that tender issuance and transmission planning are being aligned to avoid further mismatches.
India’s installed power capacity stands at 484.82 GW. Non-fossil fuel sources contribute 242.78 GW, or just over 50 per cent.
