TNPGCL to pilot 200 MW battery storage at thermal plant

Tamil Nadu Power Generation Corporation Ltd (TNPGCL) will install a 200 MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at the North Chennai Thermal Power Station on a pilot basis. This is the first such use of battery storage with a coal-based plant in the state.

The aim is to store electricity during low-demand periods and avoid frequent shutdowns. Restarting thermal units typically takes 10 to 12 hours. Continuous operation with BESS is expected to cut costs and reduce power purchases from private firms.

The project awaits state and Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation approval and will be taken up under the Viability Gap Funding scheme. A power purchase agreement with the distribution company is also required.
