THDC India Limited (THDCIL) has commenced commercial operation of the first unit (250 MW) of the 1,000 MW Tehri Variable Speed Pumped Storage Plant (PSP) in Uttarakhand. This marks India’s first variable speed PSP and the largest such project undertaken by a Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE).
The plant comprises four reversible pump turbine units of 250 MW each. Once all units are operational, the total installed capacity of the Tehri Hydro Complex will reach 2,400 MW, making it the largest hydropower complex in the country.
THDCIL is a joint venture between NTPC Limited and the Government of Uttar Pradesh.
The project has been designed for grid balancing, flexible peaking support, and round-the-clock power availability.
The variable-speed unit and control systems have been supplied by GE Vernova, in collaboration with civil and electrical contractors, including HCC.
