Dubai-based developer Amea Power has started building a 24 MW solar project in the West Nile region of northwestern Uganda. The Ituka project, located on a 52-hectare site in Ombachi village, about 450 km from Kampala, will be the first solar project in the region.
The project is being developed by Ituka West Nile Uganda Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Amea Power. The plant is expected to be commissioned by the third quarter of 2025 and will generate 53,940 MWh annually, powering over 192,640 households and offsetting 26,600 tonnes of carbon emissions each year.
A power purchase agreement with the Uganda Electricity Transmission Company was signed in September 2023, and project financing of $19 million was secured from the Emerging Africa Infrastructure Fund during COP28.
Earlier this year, Amea Power also broke ground on a 120 MW solar plant in Tunisia and secured financing for a 120 MW project in South Africa.
