RWE Supply & Trading and the Salzgitter Group have signed a seven-year power purchase agreement (PPA) for 64 GWh of green electricity annually, starting in 2027. The electricity will be sourced from the 180 MW Boitzenburger Land solar park in Brandenburg, one of Germany’s largest photovoltaic systems, operational since autumn 2023.
The solar park, covering 170 hectares, is owned by Solarenergie Boitzenburger Land GmbH, GP JOULE Group, and Mainova AG. The park’s electricity is marketed directly via PPAs, eliminating the need for a feed-in tariff under the Renewable Energy Sources Act.
This green electricity will support Salzgitter’s SALCOS® programme, aiming for nearly CO2-free steel production by 2033 using electricity and hydrogen-based processes. The initiative will replace traditional blast furnaces with direct reduction and electric arc furnaces.
David Egyptien of RWE highlighted the growing demand for CO2-free electricity, while Marco Hauer of Salzgitter emphasized the company’s goal to source 50% of its electricity from non-fossil sources by 2025 and 100% by 2030.
RWE plans to invest EUR 11 billion in green generation capacities in Germany by 2030, enhancing its current 700 MW portfolio of onshore wind and solar plants.
