PJM Interconnection has launched a multiyear partnership with Google and Tapestry to apply artificial intelligence (AI) tools aimed at improving grid planning and speeding up the integration of new energy sources. PJM operates the power grid for 67 million people across 13 US states and the District of Columbia.
The collaboration will use Google Cloud and Google DeepMind to develop AI models that enhance PJM’s ability to process interconnection requests. The tools will help streamline PJM’s planning process, which is facing increasing pressure due to growing electricity demand and a rising number of new generation projects.
Tapestry, an Alphabet-incubated initiative, will build a secure platform that unifies PJM’s existing databases and tools. This will allow planners and developers to collaborate more efficiently and improve data processing and decision-making speed.
According to PJM executive Aftab Khan, the use of AI will help reduce completion times for service requests, contributing to a more reliable and cost-effective power system. The work supports PJM’s reformed interconnection process, which began in July 2023.
Google’s Amanda Peterson Corio said the initiative could serve as a broader model for advancing energy infrastructure in the US.
