NHPC Limited has completed the trial run of Unit 2 and 3 at the 800 MW Parbati-II Hydro Electric Project in Himachal Pradesh.
The remaining two units are expected to undergo trial runs by March 31, 2025. Once fully operational, the project will significantly enhance NHPC’s hydropower capacity.
The Parbati-II project, a run-of-the-river (RoR) initiative, is located on the Beas River in the Kullu district, about 260 km from Chandigarh. It is part of the broader Parbati Hydroelectric Project, which comprises three stages: Stage I (750 MW), Stage II (800 MW), and Stage III (501 MW).
Stage II includes an 85-meter-high concrete gravity dam and a 31.5 km-long head race tunnel (HRT). It features four 200 MW Pelton turbine units, collectively generating 800 MW. The project is expected to produce around 3,108.66 million units (MUs) of electricity annually.
Power from Parbati-II will be evacuated through the Parbati-Koldam transmission line, supplying electricity to multiple states, including Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Chandigarh.
Author: PPD Team Date: 12/12/2024 The Angolan government has amended the General Electricity Law, officially ending the state’s monopoly on electricity transmission. This will enable private sector participation through public service concession agreements, aiming to accelerate electrification, attract private investment, and strengthen regional energy interconnections. The reform removes legal barriers that previously restricted private involvement, facilitating investments essential for expanding electricity access. The government aims to provide electricity to at least half the population by…
Author: PPD Team Date: 31/03/2025 Himachal Pradesh and Telangana have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop two hydroelectric projects: Seli (400 MW) and Miyar (120 MW). The agreement aims to meet Telangana’s growing demand for clean energy while leveraging Himachal Pradesh’s hydropower potential. Himachal Pradesh benefits from its perennial Himalayan rivers, allowing for hydropower generation for nine to ten months a year. In contrast, South Indian rivers provide limited hydropower generation. Telangana sees…

Author: PPD Team Date: 05/11/2024 NTPC Limited, through its R&D arm NETRA, is set to build a green hydrogen production plant that will use plasma oxy gasification technology for municipal solid waste (MSW) and agri-waste. This pioneering plant will generate high-purity hydrogen (over 99.9%) through plasma-assisted ‘oxy gasification’ of MSW-RDF/agri-waste, creating a superior synthesis gas (syn-gas). From this, hydrogen is separated using a combination of gas membrane and pressure swing adsorption techniques. This plant, which…
