Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Eco Wave Power Global AB to develop wave energy-based renewable power projects across India. Both companies will conduct a feasibility study to assess the deployment of wave energy projects.

In the initial phase, a 100–300 kW pilot project will be installed at BPCL’s Mumbai Oil Terminals, serving as a foundation for larger commercial-scale installations. BPCL will handle regulatory approvals, permits, and land use consents, while Eco Wave Power will supply its patented wave energy conversion technology, conduct research, and enhance power generation efficiency.

Additionally, BPCL has also signed an MoU with the National Sugar Institute (NSI), Kanpur, to advance research on sweet sorghum as a sustainable feedstock for bioethanol production. The initiative aligns with India’s ethanol-blended petrol programme, aiming to boost biofuel adoption and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

BPCL has committed Rs 500 million towards research and development under this partnership. The funding will support optimising sweet sorghum yields, improving agricultural practices, and refining juice extraction and fermentation techniques to enhance ethanol production. Additionally, the initiative will explore residual biomass utilisation for compressed biogas and other value-added applications.

Sweet sorghum presents an alternative to conventional ethanol feedstocks such as sugarcane and corn. The project is expected to strengthen India’s energy security, promote sustainable agriculture, and benefit rural economies. BPCL and NSI will also conduct field trials, technology assessments, and commercial viability studies to develop a scalable ethanol production framework.
