Telangana has announced plans to invest in hydroelectric projects outside its state, starting with Himachal Pradesh, as part of its green energy push.
Telangana’s Deputy Chief Minister and Energy Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, along with energy officials, held discussions with Himachal Pradesh CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu in Delhi regarding the state’s interest in hydro projects under the build, own, operate, and transfer (BOOT) model.
Himachal Pradesh has invited proposals to develop 22 hydroelectric projects. Telangana officials had previously visited Himachal Pradesh to assess potential sites and identified two viable options: the SELI HEP (400 MW) and MIYAR HEP (120 MW) projects.
During the meeting, Vikramarka formally submitted Telangana’s interest and requested a draft MoU for review. If successful, Telangana may explore similar opportunities in other states.
Telangana has an exploitable hydro potential of 1,302 MW for conventional projects and 8,755 MW for pumped storage. In comparison, Himachal Pradesh has 18,305 MW of conventional and 7,260 MW of pumped storage exploitable potential. In Himachal Pradesh, five hydroelectric schemes, including pumped storage projects (PSPs), have been concurred by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) in the last ten years, with four under survey and investigation (S&I) for preparation of detailed project reports (DPR).
