Portugal’s government is set to develop a 10GW offshore wind cluster in the Atlantic Ocean as part of its strategy for the country’s first offshore licence auction, scheduled for 2025. The plan, formulated by the Economy Ministry and the Environment Ministry, includes a 2,000km² site, as reported by Reuters.
Secretary of State for the Sea Lidia Bulcao emphasized the importance of creating a large-scale, predictable offshore renewable energy sector in Portugal. The government aims to allocate 2GW through power auctions by 2030, with long-term goals extending to 10GW as the process matures.
Portugal currently has a 25MW floating wind project off Viana do Castelo, owned by Ocean Winds, a joint venture between EDP and Engie. Several global entities, including BayWa, IberBlue Wind, and Galp-TotalEnergies, have expressed interest in the upcoming auction.
