GE Vernova Inc., through its joint venture KAPES, has been selected by Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) to provide an advanced high-voltage direct current (HVDC) system for South Korea’s largest power grid infrastructure initiative.
KAPES will deliver a HVDC system using Line Commutated Converter (LCC) technology for the 500 kV Donghaean #2 to Dong-Seoul HVDC converter station project (EP2).
The project is part of a 4 GW HVDC transmission link that will connect the east coast’s power generation complex to the Seoul metropolitan area, addressing around 40% of South Korea’s energy demand.
The EP2 project complements the EP1 project, also executed by GE Vernova through KAPES. The two projects are designed to provide a stable power supply to high-demand areas, including semiconductor hubs in Yongin, Incheon, and Pyeongtaek. GE Vernova’s scope includes the engineering and delivery of HVDC valves and control systems.
KAPES, established in 2012 as a joint venture between KEPCO and GE Vernova, has delivered significant projects like the Buk-Dangjin-Godeok HVDC connection and the Shin-Bupyeong HVDC Link.
