Spain is set to become a leader in renewable energy with the construction of the continent’s largest pumped storage power plant.
Managed by Iberdrola, the Conso II project will be located in Ourense, Galicia, and will involve an investment of over 1.5 billion euros.
The Conso II facility will feature an innovative design that connects two reservoirs using the region’s natural slope, allowing for efficient electricity generation.
With a capacity of 1,800 MW and the ability to store up to 58 million kWh, the plant can meet the daily energy needs of 10 million users. It will use surplus solar energy to pump water, ensuring the process is entirely clean and renewable.
Construction of the plant is set to begin in 2025 and is expected to create around 3,000 jobs over six years.
The Conso II plant will feature an underground design to reduce visual and ecological impact, while also utilizing existing infrastructures such as the Bao and Cenza reservoirs.
