The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) has announced plans to develop three pumped storage power plants (PSPPs) at existing dams in Chaiyaphum, Kanchanaburi, and Nakhon Si Thammarat provinces.
These facilities will have a combined capacity of 2.47 GW and are expected to become operational between 2034 and 2037. The USD 2.6 billion project aims to enhance energy storage capabilities and support the increasing integration of renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar, into Thailand’s power grid.
By storing low-cost energy during off-peak hours and discharging it during peak demand, these PSPPs will help stabilize the grid and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
As of 2023, low-carbon energy sources constitute 16 percent of Thailand’s energy mix, up from 8 percent in 2013, while gas-fired plants continue to provide 68 percent of the country’s electricity.
